Students in the Newhouse School online Master of Science in Communications program participate in two immersion experiences, which take place in the United States and select international cities. These immersions offer students the chance to experience emergent topics relevant to the field and meet classmates, professors and industry experts face-to-face for workshops and networking experiences. Each immersion focuses on a topic that is relevant to its location and to the mass media and communications industries. Guest speakers and workshop presenters will include thought leaders from top communications organizations and new media startups worldwide.
Each year, Newhouse will host two immersion experiences: one will always take place at the Newhouse School on the Syracuse University campus. All immersions will take place on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Immersions will offer workshops, speakers and networking experiences relevant to the media industry and professions as well as opportunities to experience the culture of the host city.
Course credit: This course will be taken for 1.5 credits. Each student is required to attend two immersions during the course of his or her program. Students are encouraged to attend the yearly campus-based immersion within the first two semesters of their program and then may choose one other immersion, either domestic or international, as offered. Students must complete at least one class prior to attending an immersion.
- Discuss and apply emergent media and communications concepts and skills gained through workshops and guest lectures from industry experts.
