What is Communications@Syracuse?
Communications@Syracuse is an online Master of Science in Communications program for aspiring communications leaders.
How is Communications@Syracuse different from other online programs?
Unlike many other online programs, Communications@Syracuse students meet weekly in live, face-to-face classes and engage with faculty and peers. Students also attend in-person immersion experiences in cities around the world.
How many credits are required to complete the Communications@Syracuse program?
You must complete 33 credits to earn this degree.
Is the online program available full time and part time?
The Communications@Syracuse program can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Students typically complete two courses each semester for five semesters.
How long does the program take to complete?
The program can be completed in as little as 12 months, although most students will complete it in 15 months.
Will I be required to visit campus?
While there is no on-campus requirement, you are welcome to visit the Syracuse campus in Central New York at any time. You will have access to the same campus services as our on-the-ground students, and, upon successful completion of your program, you will be invited to campus for graduation. You also may choose to attend one of your two required immersion experiences on the Syracuse campus; one on-campus immersion will be offered each year.
What is the student-to-faculty ratio?
Communications@Syracuse classes have a student-to-faculty ratio of 15-to-1. Our goal is to keep classes small to ensure you have the opportunity to really get to know your classmates and professors.
Can I focus my studies on an area of interest to me?
Yes, you can choose from the following specializations: Advertising, Public Relations and Journalism Innovation.
Will my degree indicate that I earned my degree online?
No. The only difference between the campus-based program and the online program is the modality. Your degree will state that you earned your degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
Do I need to hold an undergraduate degree to be eligible for the program?
Yes. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Are GRE or GMAT scores required for admission?
GRE and GMAT scores are not required, but you may submit official scores if you feel it will benefit your application. The GRE school code is 2823. The GMAT school code is NG0-HT-87.
The Admissions Committee reserves the right to request a GRE score from any applicant. In rare cases during the review process, the Committee may not be able to make an informed decision solely on the information provided. In these cases, an admissions counselor will request a test score on the Committee’s behalf.
I’m not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; can I apply?
Yes. However, you may need to submit TOEFL scores to complete your application. This requirement is waived if you have studied for at least one year at an institution located in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. or Australia. The TOEFL institution code is 2823 and the academic program code is 5LD-BQ-10. All applicants who are non-native English speakers also are required to submit an online video interview. If you are unsure whether you need to take the TOEFL or have questions about the video interview, contact an admissions counselor at 844-SYR-COMM (844-797-2666).
How many letters of recommendation required?
Three letters of recommendation are required, and we prefer that at least one to be from an academic reference. You should obtain references from professional and academic colleagues who can speak to your goals, motivation and ability to excel in a master’s program.
Is there an application fee?
The application fee is $75, and it is nonrefundable. If you apply by the priority deadline, the application fee is $45.
Can I request that my transcripts be sent electronically?
Many schools issue transcripts electronically, either through their own web services or through vendors. If this option is available through the institutions you attended, please specify that your transcript(s) be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
as this will expedite the delivery of your transcript(s) and the completion of your application.
