The online M.S. in Communications program teaches students to apply foundational communications skills to new technologies, ideologies and media outlets that are transforming the industry today. The constant state of disruption within the media landscape presents enormous opportunity for journalists who want to influence how stories are told.

Through the journalism innovation specialization, students will learn to hone their own unique approach to reporting news, and build the skills necessary to stay ahead of emerging trends and new technology. In addition, students who chose the Journalism Innovation specialization saw a more than 20 percent increase in their average salary from the start of the program to after graduation.

The above self-reported information is from a survey with 83 respondents who have graduated from the online M.S. in Communications program since 2015. The average salary increase for journalism specialization students was 20 percent three, six or 12 months after graduation.

Craft Stories With New Technologies

The courses for this specialization constitute 12 of the 33 program credits and teach students to produce stories for online media outlets, and how to utilize the latest technologies to reach their audience.

The topics include:

  • web and mobile story production to reinvent the editorial experience and bring fresh content to your audience,
  • emerging technologies such as drone videography and virtual reality that bring new perspectives to your stories,
  • audience research and search engine methods to bring important stories to the people that need to hear them, and
  • data retrieval and the use of graphical data to drive powerful storytelling.
